Generally, most people will not lose their jobs simply because they attended drug or alcohol treatment, provided they follow established legal steps and meet the other necessary requirements for eligibility. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are two examples of laws that provide significant protections for most Americans who require treatment. FMLA and ADA protections mean that attending rehab isnβt automatic grounds for job loss, especially in cases where the individual sought treatment for substance abuse prior to a deterioration in job performance and followed employer policies and applicable laws. However, protections differ depending on employer size and whether you qualify for FMLA or ADA, and violating workplace rules unrelated to your treatment (such as continued illegal drug use on the job) can still put your employment at risk.
