About Northeast Family Services - Manhattan

There are times when individual therapy alone cannot adequately address the struggles a patient is experiencing. Family therapy becomes the preferred approach when they need the love and support of their relatives or when there are issues impacting the entire family unit. The relationship we have with our family can significantly influence our mental health, and even the most like-minded households have their struggles. Therapy provides a safe space for everyone to develop better communication skills, express their feelings, and feel heard. Family members are so close to the problems they’re experiencing, that it’s hard for them to be objective. That’s why the insights of a licensed therapist are invaluable for identifying negative patterns and steering clients in a different direction. During a crisis, family members often revert to pre-established roles in an attempt to cope with what’s happening. A therapist can help each member recognize these roles and assess whether these behaviors are beneficial or harmful. This allows everyone to become more mindful of their actions and take steps toward resolving sources of recurring friction. Some people might see family counseling as a last resort or believe it’s the same thing as admitting defeat. However, the complete opposite is true.
